Vocal Baobab Biographies

Jose Ramón Rodriguez García - Director - Soloist - Dancer - Musician
Ramón began his professional artistic career in 1987 with the well known Yoruba Akpón (soloist) Lázaro Rós and his group Olorún. As a member of Olorún, Ramón was a soloist and participated in the recording of the compact disc Olorún I. He later joined the Marfil vocal group as a soloist and dancer. Later he enrolled in the Felix Varela Professional School, where he specialized in Yoruba chants and music. Ramón is currently the Director of Vocal Baobab, which he founded in 1994. He also graduated from Técnico Medio in Havana after studying Statistics.


Magalys Rolando Casamayor - Choral Director - Singer - Pianist
Magaly started studying piano from the age of six and graduated from the Amadeo Roldan School in 1977. She taught for 3 years at the school of music in Guantanamo. In 1980 Magalys became a music professor and head of professors in piano at the Alejandro Garcia Caturla School of Music in Havana, which she continues to do today. She has also taken advanced courses from the finest Cuban. pianists. In 1993 she joined the vocal group Marfil as a singer and pianist and later joined Vocal Baobab as director of the choral work.

Ricardo Luis Arango Holder - Dancer - Singer - Minor Percussion
In a successful artistic career, Ricardo has directed and choreographed shows for national events and international tourism. He is extremely knowledgeable about Cuban music and Yoruban chants and percussion. He joined the vocal group Marfil in 1992 and later became a member of Vocal Baobab.


Geisa Reyes Lopez - Singer - Dancer - Minor Percussion
Geisa began her artistic career with amateur modern dance groups, performing in the Casa de la Cultura de Plaza and later joined Vocal Baobab.

Marlen Oviedo Penalver - Singer - Dancer - Minor Percussion
As a child Marlen had a strong interest in popular dance and participated in many amateur festivals. She worked as a dancer in the company Turarte, travelling with them to Brazil. She is also a graduate of Técnico Medio in sound systems.

Amaury Dueñas Puig, Percussion (Batá/Congas)
Having participated in different amateur festivals, he worked in the children's group Infantil Ocha as part of his training, A student of some of the most esteemed Cuban percussionists such as Changuito and Anga, he also worked with the group Oriki group among others. He is currently percussionist with Vocal Baobab.

Adonis Andres Panter Calderón, Percussion (Congas/Batá)
Hailing from a family of musicians, he began performing from the age of ten at primary school and participated in a variety of festivals in and around Havana as both percussionist and dancer. He has played with various folkloric groups such as Osare and Obbara Ire and has also shared the stage as percussionist on a number of occasions with Vocal Baobab, before joining the Group at the beginning of 2001.
